Tokage with a Bread Plush vs. Mofusand Cat Plush: Which San-X Plush Should You Buy?

Quick Answer

If you love quirky, character-driven design with a dash of nostalgia, Tokage with a Bread Plush is your pick. If you prefer ultra-soft, sensory-friendly cuddles, the Mofusand cat plush is the winner. Both are authentic San-X products, but they serve different moods and purposes.

Walking the plush aisle at Kouhigh Toys, you might find yourself torn between two adorable San-X families: the laid-back lizard Tokage and the internet-famous Mofusand cats. Both have devoted followings, but they offer different kinds of charm.

This comparison breaks down the key differences—from size and material to personality and collectibility—so you can choose the perfect plush for your shelf or your arms.

Design and Personality: Tokage's Quirk vs. Mofusand's Fluff

Tokage, from the Sumikko Gurashi universe, is a tiny dinosaur-like creature who describes itself as 'not a lizard' and loves to be a burden. The Tokage with a Bread Plush captures that self-deprecating humor—he literally has a slice of bread on his head, which adds a layer of silly charm. This design is a conversation starter, perfect for fans who appreciate subtle storytelling in their collectibles.

Mofusand, on the other hand, features cats wearing shark costumes, often shown floating lazily. The plush versions are all about softness and a serene vibe. If you want a plush that feels like a warm hug and matches a cozy, relaxed aesthetic, Mofusand delivers. It's less about narrative and more about pure comfort.

• Tokage: ideal for Sumikko Gurashi lore lovers.
• Mofusand: perfect for cat fans and sensory seekers.

Size and Material: What to Expect in Hand

Tokage with a Bread Plush stands about 7.87 inches tall and is made of 100% polyester fiber. That's a typical size for a desk buddy or a bedside companion—small enough to display but big enough to cuddle. The polyester fiber gives a slightly firmer, more structured feel that keeps its shape well against the bread accessory.

Mofusand plushies often come in a range of sizes, but their hallmark is an exceptionally soft, plush material that invites squeezing. If you're after a plush that molds to your hand and feels like a cloud, Mofusand wins. However, the exact material composition varies by specific product, so check the listing details if that's a priority.

• Tokage's 7.87'' size fits neatly on shelves or in bags.
• Mofusand's ultra-soft texture is a sensory win.

Collectibility and Authenticity

Both plushies at Kouhigh are 100% authentic San-X products, but they appeal to different collector mindsets. Tokage, as part of the Sumikko Gurashi line, has a rich backstory and a dedicated fanbase that loves to hunt for rare variants and merchandise. The Bread Plush version adds a unique twist that could become a collector's favorite.

Mofusand, while also a San-X creation, has a broader appeal due to its viral popularity on social media. This makes it easier to find (and gift) for someone who isn't already a San-X expert. But its mainstream fame also means it might not appreciate in rarity as quickly. For pure collection value, Tokage's niche status could be a plus.

• Tokage: better for deep-cut collectors.
• Mofusand: accessible for casual fans.

The Trade-Off: Quirky Character vs. Cuddly Comfort

• Tokage with a Bread Plush: Emphasizes character design and storytelling. The bread accessory adds a playful, unique element that stands out on any shelf. Choose this for a conversation-starting collectible.
• Mofusand Cat Plush: Prioritizes softness and a soothing aesthetic. The cat-in-shark-costume motif is irresistibly cute and perfect for sensory comfort. Choose this for maximum cuddle factor.
• Size and Display: Tokage's 7.87'' fits easily anywhere, while Mofusand's typical size options (like the 14.2'' blind box) offer more presence. Consider shelf space and how you want to display the plush. Measure your display area before committing to a size.

Know Your Plush: Specs at a Glance

• Nobeko Azukisan's 7.87'' Plush (Original): Height about 7.87 inches, material 100% Polyester Fiber, age 15 and up. The 100% polyester fiber means a durable, shape-retaining plush that won't flatten easily, even with frequent hugs. The 15+ age rating signals it's a collectible rather than a toddler toy.
• Maymei Forgotten Funfair 400% Series Plush Blind Box Random Style: Size height about 14.2 inches, material fabric 37% ABS, 63% Polyester, filling 61% Polyester Fiber, 23% POM, 16% ABS, includes 6 regular + 1 chaser. This larger plush (14.2 inches) uses a mix of materials for both structure and softness, making it a statement piece. The blind box format adds excitement—you might snag a rare chaser, but you can't choose your exact character.

Which One Fits You Best?

Best for

• Collectors of Sumikko Gurashi who enjoy character lore and quirky designs.
• Fans of San-X who want a smaller, shelf-friendly plush that's easy to pose or pack.

Not for

• Those seeking an ultra-soft, cloud-like cuddle buddy—Mofusand is better for that.
• Buyers who prefer plushies with no accessories or embellishments, as the bread adds extra visual clutter.

Whether you choose Tokage's self-deprecating charm or Mofusand's fluffy serenity, you're getting a quality San-X plush that's built to last. If you're still torn, think about your daily needs: Do you want a shelf showpiece with personality, or a soft companion for cozy nights? Let that decide for you.
